An Inconvenient Truth

I came across this documentary film when my co-worker brought this DVD to work. We watched it together at our seminar room. Then I borrowed the DVD home and watched it again last night.

I didn’t know much about global warming before. I heard about it on the news and I knew it is a serious environmental issue. But I didn’t care much about it nor did I know how to prevent such problem from getting worse. After watching this film, I was deeply moved by Al Gore’s dedication and commitment to solve this problem. He explained in the most clear and understandable way how global warming is formed and showed all kinds of scientific data to prove that global warming is not a fiction. He pleaded that people should start taking action now. Simple ways like buying energy efficient electronic appliances or energy efficient automobiles can really make big difference!

10 simple things you can do to help stop global warming:

1. Drive less
Walk, bike, carpool or take public transport more often. You’ll save 1.5 kg of carbon dioxide for every 5 km you don’t drive!

2. Change a light
Replacing six regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs will save 400 kg of carbon dioxide a year.

3. Recycle more
You can save 1000 kg of carbon dioxide per year by recycling just half of your household waste.

4. Check your tires
Keeping your tires inflated properly can improve your car’s fuel efficiency. Every liter of petrol saved keeps 2.5 kg of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere!

5. Use less hot water
It takes a lot of energy to heat water — use less hot water by installing an energy efficient triple A rated shower head (3 tonnes of carbon dioxide saved per year) and washing your clothes in cold or warm water (225 kg saved per year) .

6. Avoid products with a lot of packaging
You can save 545 kg of carbon dioxide if you cut down your garbage by 10%.

7. Move your thermostat down 2 degrees in winter and up 2 degrees in summer
You could save about 900 kg of carbon dioxide a year with this simple adjustment.

8. Plant a tree
A single tree will absorb one tonne of carbon dioxide over its lifetime.

9. Turn off electrical devices
Simply turning off your television, DVD player, stereo and computer when you’re not using them will save you thousands of kilograms of carbon dioxide a year.

  1. Cool! You’ve seen it too? I was beginning to think nobody I know has heard of this documentary…It has such a devastating affect on my part in the outlook of humanity in the future…although I’ve always tried to save and conserve as much as possible all my life, but after watching that I’ve been horrified and really tried a lot harder to look for things I can do to help — no matter how small. (Although, I’d have to say that a negative psychological affect definitely goes with this documentary…pretty disturbing…)

  2. hey i knew about this too
I was also pretty excited that this documentary got Oscar’s award, but then I heard someone said that “north pole’s ice is melting but nobody mentions south pole’s ice is increasing….” Have you guys heard of that?
